The major project for the EHS was to find a home to hold our many collections including those about ships, farming, period furniture, folk art and textiles.  Our collection also includes rare and historic books, records, manuscripts, maps, and post cards. Family memorabilia, photographs, and other historical documents that the EHS would love to make accessible to the public for viewing and research, as well.  For the last 6 years, all the photos and artifacts donated to the Ecorse Historical Society has been in storage. The items documenting the city's history have most recently been stored in a small closet at City Hall.

The Ecorse Public Library Board and the Ecorse Historical Society Board has led the effort to acquire a designated space in the library and transform it into the museum.  On Monday, September 13, 2021, a representative from the civil engineering firm Anderson, Eckstein & Westrick, Inc., based in Shelby Township will attend the monthly meeting of the Ecorse Public Library Board to discuss a concept that allows the project to get underway in tandem with library renovations. The project is expected to be completed by Spring of 2023.  For the first time, all that history will be leaving the closet and being put on display inside the historical society’s first public space.

The building located at 4184 W. Jefferson Avenue will have a new library staff office space, a meeting room, bathroom facilities, new windows, new flooring, new furniture and computers that will be shared with library patrons.  The EHS is actively seeking laptops for specific use by EHS patrons to serve as research stations so interested parties can digitized their own historical information.

We’re excited for the public can get a first-hand look at the extensively renovated facility. We will be planning an open house in which photos and artifacts will be put on display. The EHS also will hold a sale of items donated to the group which doesn’t have historical significance to the City of Ecorse and/or its citizenry and events therein.  All proceeds will go into the funding of future EHS events and projects.

It’s a feeling of relief that we’re close to where we need to be. Even though they can’t go into the museum yet, they will be able to come here and do research or come here and give us their stories. We’re really on our way now. This is going to end up being a great museum and community hub!
